Fiji’s Adi Sivia Qoro calls for more support to women

AN aspiring politician is seeking much stronger support from men for women in politics who need protection from anti-feminist attacks.
While she has personally received only respect from the community, Adi Sivia Qoro wants support for women who are in politics.
The founding member of the People’s Democratic Party said the abuse already allegedly inflicted on some women candidates is an indication of the need for political parties and the election system to take stronger action to get more women into government.
Adi Sivia said independent candidate Roshika Deo was not the only woman in the political struggle to be allegedly harassed, taunted and cyber stalked.
“Others may not have reported it to the police because of the extremely abusive language and vile accusations they suffer which they would prefer not to be further circulated,” she said.
“It is a sad reflection on some sections of our society that some people object to women taking their rightful place in government to represent half the population of Fiji.”
Adi Sivia has indicated that she would contest the September general election, although she had not applied for a ticket yet, saying she was in the drawcards to be a candidate.
