A workshop in the Solomon Islands hopes to improve local women’s ability to participate in and understand politics. Josephine Teakeni tells Bethany Keats about the workshop. The workshop is being run by Voice Blo Mere and the government’s Civic Education Unit with help from UN Women. Josephine Teakeniis the director of Voice Blo Mere and Bridge Trainer with UN Women. Workshop for women tomorrow
A workshop to empower women on issues of democracy, governance and elections starts tomorrow at the National Parliament.
United Nations Women National Programme Coordinator for Gender Equality in Political Governance Audrey Manu confirmed this to the Sunday Star.
She said the workshop will focus on electoral issues and women representation in parliamentary democracy.
Manu said the workshop is being organised in line with the Young Women Parliamentary Group.
“This workshop offers the opportunity for participants to look for new strategies and plan for women participation in parliamentary democracies,” Manu explains.
“The workshop will enhance ability of participants, particularly the young women parliamentary group to understand electoral systems, including the current one used.”
Manu said facilitators of the workshop were from Voice Blo Mere and parliament’s Civic Education Unit.
She said participants will also learn about case studies in the African nation of Rwanda and Papua New Guinea.
The UN Women and parliament’s Civic Education Unit are funding the workshop, which will end on Wednesday.
